When it comes to choosing the best drinking water, two options often come up: reverse osmosis and distilled water.

Both methods are designed to remove contaminants from water, but they work in very different ways. So, if these are your only two choices, which one is better?

From Loren Lockman’s perspective, a household reverse osmosis system is generally the better option — particularly when compared with highly purified distilled water.

Let’s look at why.

What Is Distilled Water?

Distillation is a relatively simple process.

Water is heated until it boils, creating steam. That steam rises, condenses when it comes into contact with a cooler surface, and is collected in a separate chamber.

In theory, this leaves many contaminants behind and produces very pure water.

But there is an important limitation: not every substance is necessarily removed through distillation.

Some volatile compounds can evaporate along with the water and potentially end up in the collection chamber. This means that distilled water isn't automatically guaranteed to be completely pure simply because it has been distilled.

Distillation can be extremely effective when performed properly, which is one reason distilled water is commonly used in laboratories where very pure water is required. However, the quality of the equipment and the overall process matter.

How Does Reverse Osmosis Work?

To understand reverse osmosis, it helps to first understand osmosis.

Osmosis is a natural process in which water moves across a semipermeable membrane toward the side with the higher concentration of dissolved substances.

A simple way to visualize this is to think about what happens when you spend time in the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea contains an exceptionally high concentration of dissolved salts. Because the concentration outside your body is so high, water can move out of your tissues through osmosis. This is one reason prolonged exposure can contribute to dehydration.

Reverse osmosis essentially reverses this process.

Instead of allowing water to move naturally toward a higher concentration of dissolved substances, pressure is used to force water through a semipermeable membrane.

The membrane has extremely small pores that allow water molecules to pass while rejecting many dissolved substances and contaminants.

Why Does the Type of Reverse Osmosis System Matter?

Not all reverse osmosis systems are designed to produce the same degree of purification.

Highly specialized systems can produce extremely pure water, which may be appropriate for certain scientific or industrial applications.

But Loren’s recommendation for drinking water is different.

He favors a normal household reverse osmosis system rather than an ultra-purification system.

Why?

Because the goal isn't necessarily to create the purest water imaginable. The goal is to have clean, high-quality drinking water while retaining some naturally occurring minerals.

A household reverse osmosis system can remove a wide range of unwanted substances while allowing a portion of the mineral content to remain, depending on the specific system and membrane.

This is also why simply buying the most expensive or most powerful filtration system isn't necessarily the best choice for everyday drinking water.

What About Adding Minerals Back In?

A common question is:

“If reverse osmosis or distillation removes minerals, can't we simply add them back afterward?”

Technically, minerals can be added back to purified water.

But Loren questions whether this truly recreates what occurs naturally.

When minerals and other substances are present naturally in water or food, they exist within a complex environment. Adding isolated minerals back into highly purified water doesn't necessarily mean that the resulting water behaves in exactly the same way as naturally occurring water.

For this reason, Loren prefers to focus on obtaining water from a clean, natural source whenever possible rather than trying to artificially recreate the composition of natural water.

Is Spring Water Better?

If you have access to a genuinely clean, tested natural spring, this can be an excellent source of drinking water.

But it's important not to assume that water is safe simply because it comes from the ground.

Human activity has contaminated many groundwater sources, and natural water can contain microorganisms, agricultural chemicals, heavy metals, or other contaminants.

So the key isn't simply:

“Is it spring water?”

The better question is:

“Is the source genuinely clean and safe?”

If you have access to a trustworthy, tested natural source, that may be preferable. If you don't, an appropriate filtration system can be a practical way to improve the quality of your drinking water.

What About Countertop Reverse Osmosis Systems?

You don't necessarily need an expensive whole-house filtration system to improve the water you drink.

For many people, a countertop or under-sink reverse osmosis system may be sufficient for drinking and cooking water.

Whole-house systems can be useful if your goal is to filter all of the water entering your home, including the water you shower and bathe in. However, they are considerably more expensive and may not be necessary if your primary concern is the water you consume.

The right system depends on your household, how much water you use, and the quality of your incoming water.

But What About the Water in Fruit?

There is another important part of this conversation that is often overlooked.

According to Loren’s approach, the ultimate goal isn't simply to find the perfect filtration system.

It's to support the body in becoming healthier and functioning more effectively.

Whole fruits and leafy greens naturally contain large amounts of water along with minerals, electrolytes, and other nutrients.

For someone eating a whole-food, fruit- and greens-based diet, these foods can be an important source of hydration.

However, hydration isn't simply about how much water you drink.

Your body's ability to properly utilize water matters, too.

If the body is carrying a significant accumulation of waste and other substances, simply consuming more water doesn't necessarily resolve the underlying issue. Improving overall health, digestion, elimination, and hydration are interconnected processes.

So, Reverse Osmosis or Distilled?

If your choices are limited to reverse osmosis or distilled water, Loren’s preference is generally a standard household reverse osmosis system.

The reasoning is straightforward:

  • Reverse osmosis can effectively reduce many unwanted contaminants.
  • A household system doesn't necessarily strip the water to the same extreme degree as specialized ultra-pure systems.
  • Some mineral content may remain, depending on the system.
  • You don't need an expensive whole-house system just to obtain better drinking water.
  • Distillation can produce very pure water, but it has limitations and isn't automatically synonymous with perfectly pure water.

Ultimately, however, the quality of the source water and the filtration equipment matters greatly.

And perhaps most importantly, water quality is only one piece of the bigger picture.

The Bigger Goal: A Healthier Body

Rather than becoming overly focused on finding the “perfect” water, Loren encourages people to look at the bigger picture.

The body is remarkably capable of maintaining and restoring itself when we stop interfering with its natural processes.

A clean, whole-food diet, adequate rest, appropriate activity, and giving the body the opportunity to eliminate accumulated waste can all play a role in supporting health.

Water is essential — but the goal isn't simply to put more water into the body. It's to create the conditions in which the body can use that water effectively.
